Backup-Recovery :: File Sharing :: File Sharing Program :: Gnutella

What is Gnutella in the file sharing scheme of things? When you here about a Gnutella network, this refers to the number of individuals who are exchanging files over the internet without having to for through a particular website or centralized system. Instead, Gnutella servers are counted as each of the users in this peer to peer (p2p) networking philosophy.

With Gnutella download software, you can download music files or other types of files. However, unlike a centralized system where all the files are stored on one server or hard drive, you can see a number of files that other Gnutella users may have at a given time. In turn, more people can see the files of another group of people. It is sort of like a chain effect.

Gnutella in 2007 has a number of clients that use its protocol for downloading and file sharing. Some of the Gnutella clients include Limewire, Morpheus and BearShare. File sharing through Gnutella hosts and Gnutella service is available. There is even a Palm Gnutella client for those portable computer smartphones too.

You can find Gnutella free; however, you will have to research a bit to determine if you want the Gnutella Lite version or perhaps choose Gnutella 2 versus Gnutella. In addition, you cannot forget about your operating system. Before you download the wrong thing, you want to be sure that your Gnutella download will be right for your computer. If you were to download Gnutella Mac but you had an IBM compatible PC, it’s pretty much a safe bet that you don’t want it. You would want a Windows-based version of your free Gnutella software protocol. Only then would your computer be compatible.

As with some of these peer to peer file sharing networks, you have to constantly be on guard for suspicious activities before, during and after downloading. Sometimes, a few bad apples spoil the whole bunch and create viruses, Spyware and Trojans to attach to their files. If you don’t have the best protection on your computer, Gnutella could unknowingly pass one of those things over to your computer. It would be the fault of the person or people who had the file available for download. In this case, Gnutella was just the tool that allowed you to download your files. It’s the human dynamic that you have to worry about when it comes to using Gnutella and its many capabilities.
